The Armor of God-Sword of the Spirit

The Armor of God-Sword of the Spirit -Ephesians 6:17- Lesson 6

Show children a sharp {steak} knife, and a spoon.  Ask them which one would they use to cut up a watermelon or an apple or a piece of steak?  Cut up a green apple in front of them.  First try using the spoon, and when that doesn’t work, use the sharp knife.

Read Ephesians 6 as you prepare this lesson.  Verses 10-20 tell us about special weapons and tools that we need to be strong in the Lord.  We are going to explain each of these in simple terms to begin to lay a foundation that a strong Christian actively uses spiritual tools to fight against Satan, our enemy, and pursues righteousness and the glory of God.

God has given us so many tools and weapons to be strong in the Lord.  (As you review each piece, you can put on or show each of piece of armor from what the kids have made during craft time).  We have learned that the Bible is a Belt of Truth that fights the lies of the world and tells us the truth about life and about God’s plan for us.  He has given us the Breastplate of Righteousness, which makes us right with God so we don’t have to be punished for our sin.  God has given us special shoes so that our Feet are Fitted to share His love and peace with others so more people can come to Jesus. We have been given the Shield of Faith that protects us from Satan’s “fiery darts” that try to destroy our faith.  God has given us the Helmet of Salvation which gives us the power to keep bad thoughts out of our minds and good thoughts in, so that we stay close to God.  Today we are going to learn about the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Words are very powerful.  When people say something nice to you, it makes you feel good.  When people say mean, ugly things to hurt you, you feel terrible and your whole day is ruined.  What people say to you can either lift you up and make you feel happy, or bring you down and make you feel sad.  The most important words of all are the Words that God gave us in the Bible.   The Bible is a love letter from God to us and His words are powerful.  They don’t bring us down, but they give us strength.  If somebody tells us that we are not important, we know that’s not true because God created us and He loves us with an everlasting love (which is a love stronger than super-glue).

A sword is sharp and strong.  That’s exactly why God’s word is called a sword, because it is strong to defeat the lies of Satan and it is sharp enough to teach our hearts what we need to learn.

“God’s words give us strength, they help us to make good decisions, they help us get closer to God, and they help us know how to treat others.  They can encourage us and even be like food to us because they give us strength.”  (Kids’ Travel Guide to the Armor of God,pg.83)

Memory Verse: “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”  Ephesians 6:17b

If I told my friend Shelly that I really liked to be with her because she was always nice and she shared with me and let me play with her things, that would make her feel happy about herself and about me.  If I told my friend Diane that I don’t like the way she smelled and that she was mean and never looked nice, she would feel rotten about herself and would be mad at me.  We know that words are powerful and they can make us feel great or horrible.  When we use the Word of God against our enemy, Satan, we conquer Him because he knows that God’s Word is true.  God’s Word, the Holy Bible, will always tell us the truth and encourage us to be like Jesus.  You can always believe God’s Word is true and use it as a sharp and strong tool to bring you closer to God.

Ask Jesus to help you remember God’s word when you are feeling angry, scared, lonely, sad, or discouraged.  Remember that God’s word is a lamp to light your path and will always show you the right thing to do that will make God happy.  We want to glorify God in all things and use the tools He gave us to be strong in Him and tell others about His great love and power to save.

Closing Prayer: Jesus, please help us to love your Word.  We know it is a sharp tool to use against the lies of Satan, and we want to remember your Word to encourage others and to make right choices to live for you.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Craft- The children will make a sword. Put their full names on the back and let them wear them until it’s time to clean up.  Collect each one at the end and put them in the box marked with the correct time of the service.  There will be two containers for each service that will hold each piece of armor the child makes.  When the 8 lessons on over, each child should go home with a complete set of armor.
