Luke 10:38-42

Luke 10:38-42 LISTENING TO JESUS

Visit Mary Martha Bible Story

HOOK:
Pretend that Jesus is here for a visit.  Now I’m so excited that Jesus came to visit me, that I start getting my house to look nice.  I clean it and put fresh flowers on the table and then I take out my best food and start cooking a delicious meal.  I’m working so hard because I love the Lord.

ASK THE CHILDREN:  Do you think this would make Jesus happy?  Why?  (The older children may be able to explain why.  If they explain why…tell them you are trying so hard to make Him happy.)

What if Jesus knocked on my door and I smile at Him and welcome Him into my house.  PRETEND TO ACT IT OUT.  My house might not be as neat as it should be, but I tell Jesus to come in.  I would give him a comfortable chair and then I would sit down on the floor and just listen to Jesus talk.

Do you think that would make Jesus happy?  Why?  (If the children have a hard time explaining…tell them that God’s words are so important to you that you don’t want to miss anything He says to you.  So you pay attention to what He is saying.)

ASK THE CHILDREN TO CHOOSE WHICH WOULD MAKE JESUS MORE HAPPY:  Serving Him food or sitting and listening to Him talk?

BOOK: Luke 10:38-42  (Use a children’s Bible or the flannel board)

LOOK:
There is a story in the Bible about 2 women who both loved Jesus so much.  They were sisters and they were friend’s of Jesus.  Their names were Martha and Mary.  Martha greeted Jesus at the door and welcomed Him in.  Probably the first thing she thought of was, “I need to get dinner on because Jesus is probably hungry”.  She was thinking of Jesus.  That was a nice thing to do.

When Mary saw that Jesus was visiting, she sat down at His feet and listened very carefully to His words.

Martha was getting a little upset and she complained to Jesus, and said to Him, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.”

Jesus told Martha she was worried and bothered by so many things.  He told  her that Mary chose the best thing .to sit and listen to Jesus.  He wasn’t going to take that away from her.

Serving Him was a good thing, but listening to His words was even better.

TOOK:
Now Jesus is not here on the earth anymore.  He’s in heaven and I can’t make a meal for Him or sit at His feet.  So, how can I be more like Mary and listen to Jesus?  (Let the children give their ideas)

Example:

  • listening to the Bible is like sitting at Jesus feet because Jesus’ words are in the Bible
  • memorizing your Bible verses is like listening to Jesus words
  • listening at church…like right at this moment…listening to your teacher…is listening to what God is telling you.

GO OVER BIBLE VERSES WITH THE CHILDREN.  TRY AND HELP THEM TO MEMORIZE IT.

MEMORY VERSE:
“Listen to God’s voice…”  Deuteronomy 30:20

CRAFT: (Instructions and templates coming soon!!!)

CLOSING PRAYER:
God, we love you so much.  We know you love us too and you want us to obey you.  But first we have to listen to what you say so that we know what you want us to do and how you want us to be. Please help us to pay attention when we hear your Word.  In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!!
