Luke 5:6 Jesus’ Miracles

HOOK:
Fill a bag full of small objects (not too small, just small enough to be able to have 2-3 in their hands at once, ex.-a matchbox car, small action figure, small measuring cup, crayon, block, small ball, etc.)  Let each child put their hand in and grab as much as t hey can with one fist.  Count each person’s and see what was the  highest amount somebody could grab.

BOOK: Luke 5:1-11
Jesus was always teaching people about God.  The people loved to hear Jesus speak and there was always a crowd around him.  One day, when Jesus was by the water, a bunch of fishermen were cleaning their nets after a long night out in the boat fishing.  Jesus got into one of the boats that belonged to a man called Simon.  Jesus asked if Simon could move the boat out into the water a little bit so that everyone could see Him and hear Him.  After Jesus was done talking to the people about God, He told Simon to go out into the deep water and let down his nets to catch some fish.  Now Simon and his men had worked hard all night and didn’t catch a thing.  And also, they just worked hard cleaning all their nets.  Do you think they wanted to do through all that work again, when they already knew that there weren’t any fish out there?  I’m sure they were tired, but do you know what they said?  Simon told Jesus that even though they worked hard all night and caught nothing, he would go into the deep water and let out his nets because Jesus told him to do it.  Simon obeyed Jesus.  When they pulled up their nets, there were so many fish that the nets were starting to break!! They called over another boat to help them out.  There was so much fish in both boats that they began to sink! Simon fell down at Jesus’ feet and worshiped Him because he knew that Jesus did this miracle and that He was the Son of God!

LOOK:
When you put your hand in the bag at the beginning of the lesson, the most you could pull out was _____________ (2-3?).  If I put my hand in the bag, I could pull out more, because my hand is bigger than yours.  Because Jesus is God, He can do anything.  He can do miracles that we can’t explain or understand.  Simon was a good fisherman, but he didn’t catch anything that night.  But when Jesus was with Simon, they caught more fish than they could even carry back!  Jesus did this miracle to show Simon that He was the Son of God and that He could make anything happen.  You can only do what our small bodies can do.  I can only do what my big body can do.  But Jesus can do anything because He is God!

TOOK:
Wouldn’t you like it if all of a sudden you had a wagon full of candy in front of you?  Wouldn’t it be fun to see a whole pile full of toys right in your bedroom?  That’s how Simon felt.  He was so excited that Jesus helped him catch two boat-loads full of fish!!  But he wasn’t just excited about the fish.  He knew that because Jesus did this miracle, that Jesus was the Savior of the world.  (Discuss what “Savior” means and give a brief gospel message if appropriate.  See front of book for help.)
