Luke 8:22-25 Jesus’ Miracles
Jesus Stills the Storm
HOOK:
Have the children make noises of a storm by patting their hands on their knees softly, then a little more loudly and then really loud. Show them how to make a loud “sssshhhhhing” sound with their mouth while they pat their knees harder and louder. Tell them that you’re going to count to 3 on your fingers 1-2-3 and when you get to “3”, they have to be completely still and silent. Give a few practice tries and see if the room can be completely still and quiet after the count of 3.
BOOK: Luke 8:22-25
Jesus was in a boat with his disciples, and they were sailing to the other side of the lake. It must have been pretty relaxing and Jesus must have been very tired from teaching all the people, because he fell asleep in the boat. But while Jesus was sleeping a “squall” came down on the lake, so the boat was being swamped and they were in great danger. Can you guess what a “squall” is? It’s a storm. We were making our own storm when we were patting our knees and saying “Ssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh” real loud. Let’s do that again. (Count to “3” to get everyone quite again). It must have been quite a bad storm for the big fishermen to be afraid. The Bible says the boat was filling with water and they were in danger. What would you have done? Well, do you know what the big fishermen did? They called on Jesus!! The disciples (Jesus’ helpers) went to Jesus and shook his shoulders to wake him up because they were really afraid. They said, “Master, master (which means teacher), we’re going to drown!!”. They were really afraid. Jesus woke up and commanded the sea and the wind and the big waves to be still. He just talked to them, told them to cut it out, and the wind and the sea obeyed Him! The storm stopped. All was calm and there was no reason to be afraid anymore! The disciples were so amazed. They asked each other, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”
LOOK:
Why did the winds and the waves listen to Jesus when He commanded the storm to stop? Jesus is the Son of God and He has the power to do anything. The disciples learned that they didn’t have to be afraid because Jesus was more powerful than a dangerous storm. He was right there and He took care of everything.
LOOK:
Have you ever been really afraid? Sometimes at night when you go to bed, do you ever get scared? Maybe you get afraid when you meet someone new? Do you ever have that feeling that something bad is going to happen if your Mommy or Daddy is not right there with you? You don’t ever have to be afraid, because Jesus is always there with you. He is protecting you and He will care for you. Jesus’ followers were so scared that they were going to drown in the storm and something bad was going to happen to them. But they did something very important. They called to Jesus and He helped them.
TOOK:
The next time you’re afraid, remember to do what the disciples did and call out to Jesus. Say, “Jesus, I’m afraid. Please help me to remember that you’re here and you’re taking care of me.” Just like Jesus has the power to command the wind and waves to stop making a dangerous storm, Jesus has the power to help you whenever you feel afraid.
MEMORY VERSE:
“When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” Psalm 56:3
CLOSING PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, please help us to remember that you are a powerful God and that you are right here with us. When we are afraid, we can call on you and you will make our hearts calm and take care of us. We will trust in you. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!!
