MISSIONS-Matthew 28:19
Part 2
HOOK:
Bring in a globe, chop sticks and the missionary support magnet of the picture of the Clendinnens who are missionaries to Japan. Introduce the children to John and Kyoko. Tell them that the Clendinnens are from America, and even from our own church! They are living in Japan so they can tell the people that Jesus loves them. Review the definition of what a missionary is from the lesson on missions last week.
BOOK:
“Go and make disciple of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Mt.28:19
When we talked about missions last week, we explained that God wants everyone to know that He loves them. We live in a big world with lots of people, and God loves everybody. He wants everyone to have a chance to be His child. John and Kyoko Clendinnen love Jesus. They want to obey God by going to a far away land where people look different and speak a different language. When they moved all the way to Japan, they had to leave their parents and their friends. Even though they’re adults, they still miss the people they love and will probably get lonely sometimes. But because they are missionaries, they are going to be busy telling people about Jesus and teaching them what the Bible says. Just like when you are in Kingdom Kids or nursery school, you are called a “student” and I am called a teacher, John and Kyoko will have “students” that they will teach the Word of God. Another word for student is “disciple”. Jesus had 12 disciples, or 12 students, that He taught the things of God. When you tell someone about Jesus, you tell them about the Bible, you show them how God wants them to live and to worship and teach them everything they need to know, almost like a Mommy teaches a baby. As the baby grows up, he can more and more things. Then one day, the baby is all grown up and he can teach other people how to do things (give examples like feeding oneself, getting dressed, tying shoes, riding a bike, how to skate or swim). When someone is a new believer (asks Jesus to come into his life/becomes a Christian- however you want to explain it), he has to learn everything about being a Christian, like a baby has to learn everything. A missionary’s job is to teach people how to live for Jesus until they can do it on their own and then one day teach other people how to live for Jesus.
LOOK:
A missionary has a very big job. If they go to another country, they have to learn a different language and get used to different foods and a whole different way of living. They might not have all the special things that we are used to here in America. Maybe there are no cars and they have to use a bicycle, it might be very, very hot and they might not have air conditioning, and maybe not even toilets inside! As hard as it is to get used to all these things, God helps the missionaries because He wants more and more people to be His disciples. It’s exciting to do God’s work.
TOOK:
God helps the missionaries teach other people about Jesus in different ways. We can be part of helping them by praying for them, giving money to them and writing letters to them. Maybe if there’s a missionary visiting our church, your family can have them over for dinner. That would be a great way to get to know a missionary better and then you can hear stories about what their life is like and how they do their job for God. Hopefully, one day you’ll get to meet a missionary, or maybe even you’ll be one!!
Ask the children what they want to be when they grow up. Now that they’ve heard about what it’s like to serve God as a missionary, maybe they will be a {teacher, a pilot, a doctor} for Jesus in a different country!
