1Kings 17:2-16
“God Takes Care of Us”
HOOK:
Tell the children that they will be making dough for the craft later. They will be pretending to make bread. The lady in our story will be mixing almost the same ingredients to make bread.
Supplies needed: disposable bowls and plastic spoons for each child, a cup for water and oil solution, tbsp, flour, oil, and water.
BOOK: I Kings 17:2-16
LOOK:
Elijah was a man who loved God. God told Elijah that there would be no rain in Israel (where he lived) for a few years.
What do you think will happen if it doesn’t rain for a very long time?
(Things start to die, plants dry up, grass dries up, even water on the
ground like ponds or lakes dry up. Farmers need rain to grow their crops.
All plants, animals and people need water.)
God told Elijah to go by a certain brook so that he would have water. God
said that he would send ravens (birds) to bring him bread and meat. God
took care of Elijah. Then, because there was no rain, the brook dried up
and God told Elijah to go to a widow’s house and she would take care of him.
(A widow is a woman whose husband died.)
Elijah saw the widow and asked her for a drink and something to eat. She
said she could get him a drink but she only had a little flour and oil to
make a little bit of bread for her and her son. Elijah told her to make a
little bread for him first and then to make some for her and her son. He
told her that she will not run out of flour or oil. God would take care of
her, her son, and Elijah.
She had to make a decision, whether to make the bread for him or to just
keep what she had for her family. She chose to believe that God sent Elijah
to her and that God would take care of her family. She made the bread for
him and then for her son and herself.
The little bit of flour never ran out and neither did the oil. She had
enough food!
TOOK:
God took care of Elijah and the widow. Do you think God can take
care of you?
God loves us so much that He does take care of us. He gives us food to eat
and water to drink. He gives us people like mom and dad to take care of
us. He loves you and takes good care of you. Now we are going to use
flour, water, and oil to make dough. We can pretend that we are making a
little bread for Elijah.
Craft:
4 heaping tbsp of flour
4 tbsp of water
½ tsp of oil
1 plastic zip lock bag per child with the memory verse on it
You can have the 4 tbsp flour measured out in each bowl before the children
come into the kitchen and you could also have your assistant measure out 4
tbsp of water and ½ tsp of oil put in a cup for the children to just pour
into the flour mixture.
When you are ready, have the children pour their water and oil mixture into
their bowl with flour. Have the children stir the ingredients. Put a
little flour on the table in front of each student. Have them put their
hand on the flour and then they can pick up the dough with their hands. If
the dough is too sticky, you could add a little flour. Don’t put too much
flour because the dough will get crumbly. Let the children play for a
little while and remind them about Elijah being taken care of by a widow.
When they are done they can put their dough into the plastic bag and take it
home with them.
Memory Verse:
Genesis 50:24 “…God will surely take care of you…”
