1 Samuel 18-20

1 Samuel 18-20
“Be a Good Friend”
HOOK:
From home, bring a special treat for the children…something they would really like (check for allergies 1st)!  Give the treat (with a wrapper on it or put in plastic wrap) to half of the children (every other child).

Tell them not to eat it until you say so.  Ask:  Do you like the treat you have?  (Try to pick something most of the children will like.)  Ask one child who has the treat, “Would you like to eat your treat now?”  Then tell that child to give his/her treat to a child who doesn’t have one.  Have all the children with treats give their treats to a child who doesn’t have one.  Tell the children with the treats that they can eat them now.  Say:  “It’s hard to give something away that you really like, but when you love someone like you love yourself it makes you happy to give them things.”  Then give the other half of the children a treat and they can eat it.  (It is so nice to give something nice for your friend.)

LOOK:
We hear a story today about two young men who loved each other so much.  It made them happy to give things to each other.

READ:
Bible Story from bible or use flannel board to tell story.

David and Jonathan were best friends.  They loved each other very much. Jonathan gave David gifts.  He gave him a robe, armor, a sword, a bow and a belt.  These were very important things to Jonathan because Jonathan was a soldier.  A soldier needs his armor to protect himself.  His sword to fight his enemies with, and his belt to hold his garments so that he could move well.  Then it was time for the two men to say goodbye to each other, and they cried.  They promised to always be friends and to take care of each other, and they did.  That is what good friends do, they help each other.

TOOK:
What are some things that you can do for your good friends?

Example:  gifts, give them a bottle of water when they are thirsty, share your snack or lunch, help them clean up a mess you both made, give him a turn with your favorite toy, etc.

MEMORY VERSE:
“A friend loves at all times . . .”  Proverbs 17:17

CLOSING PRAYER:
Thank you God for giving us friends that we can play with and share with and to help us when we need it.  Help me to be a good friend and to remember that you are my best friend. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
