Exodus 2:1-10 BE CARING
HOOK:
Put a baby doll in a basket (like a picnic basket) and put it in the middle of your circle. (Don’t let the children see you put the doll in the basket.) ASK THE CHILDREN: “What do you think is in the basket?” Let the children guess.
Then look inside and act surprised and say, “What is a baby doing in a basket?” Our Bible story is about a baby in a basket and a young girl named Miriam who takes care of the baby.
BOOK: Exodus 2:1-10
LOOK:
There was a time when Jewish boy babies were in danger. The Pharoah (King) didn’t want any more Jewish boys to be born.
This one Jewish family had a beautiful baby boy. They kept it a secret, but when the boy was 3 months old they decided they would have to do something to save his life. The mom got a wicker basket (like this one) and put tar and pitch all over it. The tar and pitch was to help the basket float in the water and not sink. (It would close up all the holes in the basket so water would not leak through.) Then she put her baby in it and put it into a river bank. Tall grass (or reeds) grow in a river bank and that is where she put it (among the reeds).
The boy’s sister, Miriam, watched her brother. She was probably hiding behind the grass or reeds.
A princess was by the river and she saw the basket and told her maids to get it for her. When she opened it, she saw a baby and he was crying. She felt bad for him. She knew it was a Jewish boy.
Miriam went up to the Princess and asked if she wanted her to go find a nurse for him to feed and take care of him for her. The Princess said, “Yes.” Miriam got her own mother to take care of her brother. When the baby was a little older they brought him back to the Princess and the Princess named him Moses.
TOOK:
Miriam watched her baby brother and took good care of him.
ASK THE CHILDREN: “Who can you help take care of?” Example: a baby brother or sister you can help mom with, a friend you can watch out for, an animal (dog or cat) that depends on you to care for it.
God wants us to help others.
MEMORY VERSE:
