Kids Bible Lessons:
Proverbs 1:1-7 Virtues (Elem.-JH)

Proverbs 1:1-7 Wisdom/Foolishness
Solomon
HOOK:
Read the children a picture book about Solomon (you can choose one or use the one provided).  Then show the children the book of Proverbs in your Bible, and explain that King Solomon wrote down things that God wants us to know.  Proverbs is a book of wisdom.

BOOK: Proverbs 1:1-7
God our father gave us the Bible to tell us how much He loves us and how He wants us to live.  The book of Proverbs in the Bible is a special treasure of wise sayings.  If someone is wise, it means that they are more than smart.  It means that they know how to use the brains God gave them in a smart way.  Being smart is knowing things.  Being wise is doing the smart things you know.  Proverbs tells us:

  • to listen to the things our parents teach us (1:8)
  • to listen to when people correct us or tell us a better way to do things (1:3)
  • a fool doesn’t want to listen to wise teaching or correction (1:7)
  • wise people will get even smarter (1:5)

LOOK:
What do you think is better?  To be smart, or to be dumb?  Is it better to be wise or foolish?  Everyone would rather be smart, than dumb.  Being wise is better than being a fool.  A fool is someone that doesn’t listen to their parents or other adults when they tell them the right things to do.  A fool does what he thinks is right in his own mind, whether it’s right or not.  Your parents are older, and they know more than you because they’ve been a kid and they try to protect you.

If your parents tell you not to walk outside without your shoes, there’s probably a reason.  What if you said, “I know my Mom wants me to wear shoes when I go outside, but I’m just going to be out there for a minute so it doesn’t matter?”  Then you run outside, cut your foot on glass and have to get stitches.  Your mom knew there was glass outside, but you didn’t.  That’s why she told you to wear shoes when you’re outside.  God wants you to obey your parents ALL the time.  That is the wise thing to do.

TOOK:
When we are young, we have a lot to learn.  We’re going to learn a lot from our parents, older brothers and sisters, our teachers, from books and from the world around us.  It’s going to take us a long time to become wise, because there’s a lot to learn.  As you learn to read and as you get bigger, you will be able to read the book of Proverbs on your own to help you be wise.  It’s very important to ask God to help you be wise.  It’s important to accept when people teach you the right things and correct you for doing the wrong things.  Solomon was wise because he prayed to God and God gave him wisdom.  God will give you wisdom when you ask for it, too!  (James 1:5)

MEMORY VERSE:
“Let the wise listen and add to their learning.”   Proverbs 1:5

CLOSING PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the Bible and the book of Proverbs to help us be wise. We ask that you give us your wisdom so that we can live for you.  Help us to obey our parents when they teach and correct us.  We love you!  In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!

JESUS’ LIFE JESUS IS OUR BEST FRIEND (Lesson #1)

PDF Print-out> Jesus Friendship Bracelet
HOOK:
Show the children the bracelet they will be making for the craft.  Tell them that this is your new friendship bracelet.  A friendship bracelet shows you are best friends with someone very special.   I have my special friend’s name written on the beads of my bracelet.  I’ll tell you a riddle and then we’ll see if you can guess who my best friend is!

My best friend stays with me all the time,
And HE helps me and loves me come rain or come shine!
My best friend and I have so much fun;
I’m glad ‘cuz my best friend is God’s only Son!
Who is my best  friend?

Congratulate the children after they guess.  Jesus is my very best friend, and He is your best friend, too!  That’s why I have Jesus’ name on my friendship bracelet.  Can you spell Jesus’ name with me (Point to the letters on your bracelet as you spell Jesus’ name.) Would you like to make a bracelet with Jesus’ name on it, too?  After the lesson, we’ll make it together.

BOOK:
Proverbs 18:24a
“There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

LOOK:
Ask the children to tell you what makes a best friend.  Tell the children that Jesus is everything and more that we want a best friend to be.  He teaches us about God and helps us when we need help. Jesus is never too busy to listen, and He stays with us all the time.  We can trust Jesus to care for us and always love us.  With Jesus as our best friend, we never have to feel alone or scared.  Jesus is so wonderful, isn’t He?  What a friend we have in Jesus!

Why is Jesus such a good friend?

How can we tell Jesus we love Him and want to be His friend?

TOOK:
Let’s go make our friendship bracelet.  It will be a good reminder that Jesus is our best friend and that He is always with us.  When you look at the bracelet, you can tell Him you love Him and thank Him for all the good things in your  life!

Memory Verse:
“There is a friend who sticks closer than a    brother.” Proverbs 18:24a

CRAFT:
Make a bracelet with Jesus’ name using letter beads.  Go over the memory verse several times as you help the children string the beads.  Spell “JESUS” over and over again so they memorize the spelling (it will be easy for them to do if you repeat it with the same tone in your voice every time).

Who is Jesus?  He is our friend.

CLOSING PRAYER:
Thank you Jesus for being my best friend.  Help me to trust you every day and to show that I love you!  In Jesus’ name, Amen!
